Question: | "We have submitted turf samples taken from two greens on our course. You will see that the turf is very badly discoloured and it reminds us of the effect of sodium chlorate on grass. Would you let us have your opinion on what steps should be taken to correct the condition. Where the damaged patches are, foot marks lead from one area to another and then in the direction of the next affected green. We wonder whether the condition is due to vandalism?" |
Answer/Response: | "Chemical analysis has not shown anything which would be really toxic to the grass. A trace of chloride which could have arisen from the decomposition of chlorate was found but the amount was not more than is sometimes found in soils. We do not think that chlorate was responsible for the damage. The condition of the grass foliage suggests that it could have been damaged by scorch and there is a possibility that selective weedkiller might be responsible. We cannot say this with confidence as the selective weedkiller will have decomposed by this time and could not be found by analysis. Microscopic examination shows the presence of Fusarium spores. This disease could have attacked the weakened turf and will be responsible for accentuating the damage. We suggest the damaged greens be treated with a fungicide. The dead turf should then be patched out and on completion of this work a repeat application of fungicide should be made." |
