Question: | "During the present season we have tried a longer height of cut (3/8 in.) on our greens. There is now a better mat on the greens and they have withstood the drought well but creeping coarse grass seems to be gaining a foothold. Brushing before cutting is being done but it seems that something more is necessary. Your observations will be greatly appreciated." |
Answer/Response: | "The present height of cut i.e. 3/8 in. would tend to encourage a coarser sward in general and the following heights of cut, although not meant to be hard and fast, are more suitable for golf green maintenance: Spring, autumn and periods of drought .. .. ¼ in. Normal seasonal mowing .. .. .. .. 1/8 to 3/16 in. Late autumn - winter period .. .. .. 5/16 in. The height of cut is determined by placing a straight-edge across the front and rear rollers of the mower. The height of cut is then measured as the distance from the straight-edge to the cutting edge of the sole plate. To reduce the coarser grasses light scarification on occasions before mowing is done will prove beneficial. Scarification should be carried out until the autumn during periods of good growing weather and then resumed when growth starts next spring." |
