Question:"Towards the end of October, we aerated the greens as you advised and then top dressed with compost. Several days afterwards we saw signs of disease which was severe. Control measures have been carried out but we wonder if our compost is too rich. We are sending you a sample and ask you to have it analysed and give us your opinion."
Answer/Response:"There are two possible reasons why your compost has encouraged attacks of disease: (a) There is the smothering effect of the compost. Anything which covers the grass to any extent is liable to set up a condition in which most of the fungal diseases of turf will be encouraged. (b) There is also the effect of the lime in the compost and it seems to us after examining the compost that you are still using material containing lime. We find in the case of a number of turf diseases that lime encourages their spread. We are inclined to the view that it is the smothering effect of the compost that has encouraged the disease in this instance. We wonder if it was applied a little too heavily."
