| Question: | "We are sending a sample of a proprietary brand of tobacco waste and ask for your opinion on its suitability for top dressing. We understand the material costs about 25/- per 5 ton load plus carriage and that it contains a fairly high proportion of lime and phosphate." |

| Answer/Response: | "Tobacco waste at the price quoted seems a useful source of organic matter for preparing compost. It should not be regarded as a fertilizer except in a very mild way. We suggest that the best way of using the material is to mix it with screened medium soil and sand. We have actually tried this and found a useful mixture to be: 80 parts by volume screened soil, 30 parts by volume sand 20 parts by volume tobacco waste" |
