| Abstract/Contents: | "In 2004 and 2005, outbreaks of a Rhizoctonia-like disease were seen in California, Nevada and Washington on annual bluegrass (Poa annua) putting greens at air temperatures of 18° to 32°C. Unlike Yellow Patch caused by Rhizoctonia cerealis, disease continued to develop at temperatures above 24°C. Isolates from 14 different annual bluegrass greens were characterized by optimum growth temperature, nuclear number, anastomosis (AG) group an morphology. Sequencing and restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphism analysis of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions was also performed. Isolates from two locations were identified as Waitea circinata var. zeae (Wcz), (teleomorph of R. zeae). The remaining isolates were identified as Waitea circinata var. circinata (Wcc). This is the first report of Wcc as a pathogen of annual bluegrass in the US and for Wcz in CA. Additional work is being performed to determine the epidemiology and best management strategies for this pathogen." |
