Abstract/Contents:"Over the last few years, several critics about the use of synthetic pesticides on turfgrass have lead to new regulations that restrain, or even ban their use on turfgrass in many municipalities across Canada. However, despite these regulations, very few alternative products are currently available to effectively replace synthetic pesticides. Our project is focusing on another approach to reduce pesticide use, the stimulation of the plant natural defence mechanisms with different commercial elicitors. Our goal is to develop a method to evaluate the ability of different products commercially available to stimulate genes involved in plant defence reactions. Soluble silicon will be used as a model and will be supplemented to creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) as part of the fertility regime. Twelve genes involved in plant defence mechanisms were identified based on results obtained with the Arabidopsis thaliana - Erysiphe cichoracearum model. PCR primers for these genes were designed using sequences available on NCBI for other grasses (Rice, Barley, and Maize). Expression of the selected genes will be monitored using RT-PCR 48 hours after inoculation with dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa). Future experiments under field conditions will evaluate the effects of other commercial elicitors on these defence genes."
