Question:"We are extending our practice putting green by approximately 25 yd. by 10 yd. A certain amount of grading will be necessary to marry the new section with the existing putting surface. We have stripped off the existing turf and are using it to re-turf some of our summer tees. We are anxious to get the new section re-turfed as soon as possible and would like your recommendations regarding the preparation of the ground and also information about the kind of turf we require to purchase."
Answer/Response:"If the grading of your proposed extension is only of a minor nature it could be done by importing top soil. If there are major discrepancies then the existing top soil should be removed and the necessary grading carried out in the sub-soil prior to returning the top soil. In any cause you should provide a minimum uniform depth of 6 in. of top soil over the whole area. The turf bed preparation should follow similar lines to seed bed preparation, i.e. first digging over the top soil and then by alternate firming and raking produce a fine and firm soil bed. In the final raking a dressing of bone meal at the rate of 2 oz. per sq. yd. should be worked into the soil surface. We would not advise buying any turf. We feel that you should be able to select a clean area of fairway where the sward is primarily bent and fescue and work it down to give a good turf. The robbed portion of fairway could be returfed from the semi-rough or rough or seeded."
