| Question: | "Some fifteen months ago we sowed nine extra greens and they are progressing very well indeed but we are being pressed by members to open them now right at the beginning of winter. What are your views?" |

| Answer/Response: | "In our opinion it would be a great mistake to open the greens just yet, in fact we think it would be a folly and a shame. Naturally there is a great urge at any club to open new holes as soon as possible but we do not consider the time has come. The putting surface will not be very good yet. The soil structure in the samples you sent is now quite good. Walking on the young turf during wet or frosty conditions will destroy this good condition so leading to drainage troubles and possibly disease. It will also upset the surface. Apart from this there is danger of frost damage if people insist on playing in bad weather. We think the greens should be kept closed over winter and opened in late spring." |
