| Question: | "About twelve months ago we laid a bowling green with Lancashire seamarsh turf. Generally speaking the green looks exceptionally well but a number of turves are not growing and are developing moss. Root growth is quite vigorous except on these turves, a sample of which is enclosed. Perhaps you would examine the sample. We propose to replace the bad turves immediately." |

| Answer/Response: | "We have carefully examined the specimen turf and find that the main grass constituent is Glyceria (Puccinellia) maritime. This grass does not thrive in positions away from the sea or under regular close mowing. We consider this explains why these turves are dying out and allowing other plants to invade. Also found in the turf were a number of plants of sea-pink and annual meadow-grass. Red fescue was also present. As regards improvement, we agree that the best way is to replace with new turf." |
