| Question: | "Please advise on the following points: 1. We are about to autumn top dress our greens with soil, sand and peat. Can you suggest a slow acting fertilizer to mix with this dressing? 2. We have just finished mechanical hollow tining of our fairways and semi-rough which have always been short of grass. Please recommend a fertilizer." |

| Answer/Response: | "1. It is not usual to include any fertilizer in top dressing to be given at this time of year. There are dangers and it is not recommended. If you really feel some sort of dressing is needed you could perhaps give 3 lb. fine bone meal per 100 sq. yd. but no more than this. 2. We can only advise you on fertilizer treatment of fairways after examining samples and preferably seeing the condition of the turf. Perhaps you will be good enough to send a sample from each fairway composed of hollow tine cores taken along the length of each hole. A golf ball box makes a suitable container. If you will do this we will analyse the samples and try to advise you but really the most complete way of helping on this sort of problem is by a combination of analysis and personal examination." |
