Question:"Would you please advise us on a machine for hollow tining. Recently we have been invited to hire a power driven probing machine which it is claimed gives 3 ½ in. penetration. Do you know whether this machine or any other will do the work in a comparable manner to hand work. We have in mind the saving of labour."
Answer/Response:"We have knowledge of the machine you mention and consider that whilst it does a reasonable job under open ground conditions, it is incapable of hollow tining to the depth obtained by a hand fork. No powered machine available today is capable of doing this. We consider that where conditions really warrant hollow tine aeration the work can only be done satisfactorily by hand. We understand a 3 ½ in. penetration has been guaranteed by the machine you mention, and think that whilst this might be obtained in some circumstances we think it is rather optimistic. Knowing something of your greens we suggest that hand hollow tine aeration be carried out to a depth of 5 to 6 in. On many greens the whole of the surface may not require the treatment, and it could be confined to higher parts, sloping faces and any other regions which show some definite weakness. An alternative is to work on a rotational basis hollow forking, say, six greens thoroughly each year."
