Question:"We would be interested in your comments on the following points: 1. Our greens have been treated with compost for the past three years after hollow tine forking in the autumn. This year we have no compost and wonder if you can suggest alternative treatment. We have plenty of peat and sand available. 2. Our greens are heavily infested with yarrow and pearlwort whilst clover has been troublesome this year. Have you any suggestions on suitable selective weedkillers."
Answer/Response:"As compost is important for top dressing we suggest the preparation of new compost heaps be regarded as an essential part of your winter programme. As your greens have been hollow tine forked for three years running, slit tine aeration, which presumably you could do mechanically, should be done as an alternative. Following the work we suggest you apply a light dressing of fine peat and sand. It should be worked into the turf and no fertilizer should be added. The campaign against weed should start next May or June and a selective weedkiller containing CMPP may be used. Excellent results have been obtained against the weeds you mention, The application should be made with a sprayer during settled periods of good growing weather."
