Question:"Your Advisory Officer will remember that during his spring visit we pointed out some tufty yellow grass on the 4th green. This still persists. It is unsightly and inclined to grow above the general level of the turf. We are sending a small sample to you and should be pleased to have your report in due course."
Answer/Response:"A thorough examination of the turf sample you sent shows that the yellow tufts are bent (Agrostis), a desirable species so far as sward composition is concerned. The tufts arise from underground runners and our Plant Pathologist reports that the cause of this tufted regeneration is not yet known. A similar condition found in the U.S.A. has been attributed to Nematode activity, but this is still to be proved in this country. Admittedly we find Nematode activity, but this is still to be proved in this country. Admittedly we find Nematodes on your sample but these exist in most turf both bad and good. No corrective measures can be advised but we will continue to study the problem."
