Question:"We should be glad to have your comments on the soil sample we are sending you. This comes from one of many small areas around the edges of some of our greens which in the last week or two have gone completely brown. You will see that the soil looks very dry and powdery in spite of heavy rain just lately."
Answer/Response:"Judging from the sample the turf is suffering from what we call "dry patch". The cause of dry patch is of course primarily lack of water but it may be encouraged by over acidity, lack of mineral plant foods or in some cases possibly fungal infection. Whatever the cause water must be got into the dry places and artificial watering should continue whenever the weather is dry. To assist the penetration of water we suggest the dry patches be spiked and then treated with a wetting agent solution. Four pints of wetting agent mixed in 100 gal. of water is sufficient to treat 100 sq. yd. The application should be made using a watering can."
