Question: | "We have noticd a lot more grasshoppers on our course this year than normal. Would you provide some information on their life history and inform us what control measures should be taken. A specimen of the insect is enclosed." |
Answer/Response: | "The insect you sent to us is a Daddy-long-legs or Crane fly and not a grasshopper. The common species of crane fly lays eggs during late August and early September and some 250-350 can be laid by one female. The eggs hatch in about ten days. The grubs at this stage are very minute and dry conditions at this time of the year can lead to heavy mortality. Mild soft conditions favour the survival of the grubs. By October and November the grubs are larger and they steadily increase in size and become more voracious. They feed through the winter on decaying vegetable matter and living roots. By early summer the grubs are full size and these are the common leather jackets. They pupate and eventually emerge as the adult flies to complete the life cycle. Control is normally carried out in November or in March using insecticides like DDT, BHC or Aldrin. The fact that the adult flies are common now suggests control measures may be necessary, but a test might be done to determine the number of grubs present before treatment is undertaken." |
