Abstract/Contents:"The major disease problem for production of perennial ryegrass seed in the NW USA is stem rust (Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola). We developed and implemented a weather-based disease warning system for the disease. The system is based on an epidemiological simulation model that uses daily weather data to drive submodels for plant growth, pathogen activity, and their interaction. Fungicide activity (pre- and post-infection) is modeled as effects on pathogen survival and reproduction. The warning system is implemented as an interactive web site. Users enter scouting data and select a location from a map of automated, telemetry-linked weather stations sited in seed-production fields. Fungicide type (triazole and/or strobilurin) and application dates can be entered. The interface loads the user inputs and the current data of the selected weather station, runs the simulation, then outputs the results as a graph of disease severity (up to current day) vs. time. Severity is shown as visible disease and also as total disease (including latent infections). Action thresholds for total disease are given. Full-season archived weather data lets users do virtual experiments to test efficacy of fungicide schedules."
