Abstract/Contents:Problems with the establishment of autumn-reseeded ryegrass (Lolium) can be attributed to a number of causes, 1 of which is damage by pests, particularly larvae of shoot-boring pests such as Oscinella frit (L.). In trials with various ryegrass cultivars in England and Wales over a period of 2 years, bendiocarb was tested as a seed treatment and as spray and granule formulations for protecting the grass from pests. The trials included both conventional broadcasting of seed following ploughing of old sward, and direct drilling following the use of total herbicide. Seed treatments at rates of 10 g a.i./kg of seed and above gave greatly-improved plant stands, and in some trials resulted in yield increases. Spray and granule applications at 0.5-1.0 kg a.i./ha also significantly improved establishment at some sites. Bendiocarb was also tested on spring-reseeded leys and, although results were less dramatic than on autumn sowings, significant increases in plant stand were obtained. No evidence was found of phytotoxicity in any of the tested varieties of Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum) or perennial ryegrass (L. perenne), or in timothy grass (Phleum pratense) or cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata), hich were included in some of the mixtures.
