| Abstract/Contents: | "Field and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine water requirements of 'Merion' Kentucky bluegrass and 'Rebel' tall fescue during establishment. In one study, mini-lysimeters were employed to determine potential evapotranspiration (pot. ET) during establishment in the field using the water balance method. Results showed that 'Merion' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and 'Rebel' tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) had ET rates of 5.2 and 5.3 mm day-1, respectively, when data were averaged over two summers. During one summer, 'Rebel' began using significantly more water than 'Merion' 20 days after seeding. In a separate field study, also using lysimeters, establishment of the tall fescue was evaluated under deficit irrigation. Results showed that successful establishment did not occur when irrigation was done at 50 percent of the pot. ET of a mature turf. Greenhouse and field studies were also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-plant soil incorporation of a hydrophilic polymer in improving 'Rebel' tall fescue establishment during drought. Application of the polymer did not increase drought survival of seedlings." |
