Question:"Our head greenkeeper prepares temporary greens right through the year. A number of Committee men question this policy. Is he merely wasting his time in this action when we may only use these greens for a couple of weeks each winter?"
Answer/Response:"Temporary greens should ideally be maintained to the highest of standards if time and finances allow. Hopefully, all the year-round attention to temporary green areas will produce a better and more acceptable surface for golfers than temporary greens hurriedly mown out in the autumn, probably a very short time before they may be needed. Golfers invariably dislike temporary greens due to the fact that chosen areas are either too small, inappropriately positioned or more commonly, because they have an uneven and unfair surface. Of course no-one really knows how frequently temporary greens will be needed for use during adverse weather - the range could be from no use whatsoever in a mild, dry winter, to a significant number of weeks if there are frequent, frosty spells or lengthy, wet periods when maybe the main greens become too soft and wet for play. Temporary greens of good standard are also well appreciated for reasons other than for use during adverse weather conditions, for example during short spells, when the main greens are out of play due to various management practices being undertaken, such as hollow tining/top dressing. Furthermore, temporary greens can be invaluable during the winter when the main greens may need a brief rest owing to constant and heavy traffic producing significant wear problems."
