Abstract/Contents: | "South Florida's southern counties are experiencing rapid urbanization, reflecting statewide population increases which promise to make Florida the third most populous state by the year 2000. This demographic shift has increased demand on all horticultural enterprises to provide quality plant materials for a changing urban landscape. Perhaps most affected is South Florida's sod production industry. Once based on labor intensive harvesting of reclaimed pastureland, the local industry has evolved into a highly mechanized, economically viable, agribusiness. Annually, over 30,000 acres valued at over 50 million dollars, are produced for the area market. Current isues facing the industry include: increased demand of productive land for non-agricultural development; protection of potable water recharge areas; and environmental concerns over water quality and conservation of the regions fertile organic soils. Strategies to address these issues and a survey illustrating the changing nature of this industry are presented." |
