Question: | "Many club members are appalled at the state of our bunkers. Poor shape, square corners, flat contours and insubstantial banking are the main complaints. What can be done to improve matters?" |
Answer/Response: | "The poor features described cannot be improved simply by maintenance practices normally associated with bunkers, e.g. edging, raking. This query calls for a wholesale review of the bunkers on the course. Although one of our golf agronomists could suggest a renovation programme, the problems are such that we feel it would pay to bring in a qualified golf course architect to advise maybe on the closure of certain bunkers, together with the repositioning and recontouring of others etc. Sometimes bunkers are made redundant as a strategic hazard by the advances in golfing technology, not an improvement in the play of golfers but in their equipment, particularly clubs and balls. Add to this in your case the poor contouring of bunker floors and surrounds and the rather angular shape of many, then there is a clear requirement for expert guidance on the future of many of the sand hazards on the course. The Institute has its own architect who could complete such a task, also advising on drainage requirements and suitable sands for filling the bunkers." |
