Question:"The recession has hit us badly, unfortunately immediately prior to starting work on the construction of a slit drained soccer pitch at a local sports club. Can we cut costs whilst maintaining standards, we are thinking particularly about expensive materials such as back-filling for pipe drains and sand for the rootzone mix."
Answer/Response:"Although the specification provided by the Institute is for a very high standard, if any part of the works are curtailed then there could be a substantial drop in quality. There should certainly be no cutting back on materials, the stone and sand blinding and rootzone specified are vital to maintain surface to drain contact. However, it may be possible to spread the costs over 2-3 years by modifying and splitting the project. Maybe introduce the main pipe drainage system in the first stage, a year or two later as finances permit, carry out some sand slitting etc. Remember to budget for sand top dressings for 5 years or more after completion of a slit drainage project which is essential to retain a clean top to the sand slits."
