Abstract/Contents:The results are given of tests in England to determine whether an insecticide treatment applied only at sowing could improve the establishment of Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum) and, if so, whether this could lead to any subsequent improvement in annual yield. The seed was broadcast in spring at 2 or 20 kg/ha on to fine or coarse seedbeds and the beds were left untreated, treated with fungicide (benomyl at 10 kg/ha and a seed-dressing of 1.5 g drazoxolon/kg seed), treated with insecticide (a granular preparation giving 10 kg phorate/ha) or treated with both the fungicides and the insecticide. The seed rate affected weed invasion and yield more than seedbed condition. The insecticide treatment increased the establishment and yield of ryegrass and its contribution to total herbage yield under all 4 sowing conditions. It increased the annual dry matter yields of herbage harvested from 8.3 to 9.3 t/ha. The fungicidal treatment had no effect. The improvements caused by the insecticide treatment were associated with a reduction in the level of infestation by Oscinella spp., especially at the time when the establishing grass was particularly vulnerable. The effect of the single treatment in April was still detectable in October.
