Abstract/Contents:"Mole crickets (Orthoptera:Gryllotalpidae) are severe pests of turf, pastures, and horticultural crops in the southeastern U.S. and Puerto Rico. The following three pest species belong to the genus Scapteriscus, and were accidentally introduced into Florida from South America: the tawny mole cricket, S. vicinus Scudder; the short-winged mole cricket, S. abbreviatus Scudder; and the southern mole cricket, S. acletus Rehn and Hebard. Mole crickets have become economically important pests due to the absence of specialized natural predators and parasites in the U.S. Costs due to mole cricket damage and control is greater than $30.0 million per year in Florida. Larra bicolor Fabricius (Hymenoptera:Sphecidae) is a parasitoid of mole crickets. This digger wasp has been introduced and established in Florida as part of a classical biological control program. Its utility as a natural enemy is being investigated. The genus Larra contains at least 16 species of neotropical parasitoids of mole crickets, potentially useful as biological control agents. The establishment of an effective natural enemy would eliminate or reduce costly and environmentally hazardous applications."
