Question:"Year in, year out we have to carry out intensive repairs along the rink ends of our flat bowling green. Is there any way we can reduce the damage and hence the time and money spent each autumn renovating it?"
Answer/Response:"The cause of such intensive wear patterns is a direct consequence of concentrating play on the same favoured rinks with minimal or no movement of rink markers. Visually this produces a green with islands of bare ground along the rink ends, usually between the most popular central rinks 2 to 4. These heavier used lines of play can eventually disrupt the surface levels promoting valleys where bowls travel. As a consequence any bowler not finding this line loses out and complains that the green draws badly and this in turn encourages the use of the same rink marks. To repair the severe damage on rink ends it will be necessary to increase the amount of aeration along worn ends and returf. Varying the depth of the perimeter cut to reduce mower scuffing when continually turning on the same spot on the extreme edge to the green may help. However, damage will remain an annual irritation unless there is a clear change in the attitude of the bowlers. Breaking the cycle of events which promote wear patterns can be extremely difficult and limiting the damage is very much in the bowlers hands, they must be prepared to spread play far more evenly across the green. This can be achieved through the employment of three or more marks per rink and turning play round through 90°, carefully monitoring play to ensure each mark receives a similar level of play. Although the width of rinks for competition play must be held at 18 to 19 feet, it is acceptable to reduce this to a minimum of 14 feet for non-competition play and this can prove a valuable means of taking play from favoured lines and even resting large sections of a green to aid recovery and therefore avoiding top dressing. Once the support of the bowling fraternity has been obtained it will be possible to gradually improve surface levels so that there is no advantage to be had from whichever rink mark bowlers play. This process will involve heavy top dressing to be distributed to low ground with a lute, applying more dressing locally to low spots through the growing season, and selective hollow tining of high areas to promote settlement. A level survey should be taken so the greenkeeper is aware of where to concentrate his efforts, the survey to be repeated perhaps every other year to monitor progress."
