Abstract/Contents:"Cold hardiness levels of 'Midiron' and 'Tifgreen' bermudagrass crowns sampled from field plots were evaluated from October through March. Experiments were conducted with two independent systems (excised crown cooled in test tubes in a bath followed by electrolyte leakage viability test; and intact plants, including soil, in a refrigerated chamber followed by regrowth). Results from the two methods were in close agreement. Although killing temperatures of 'Midiron' and 'Tifgreen' were similar at mid-winter, 'Tifgreen' acclimated more slowly in fall and deacclimated earlier in spring. Therefore, selection of cold hardy bermudagrass varieties should include testing during acclimation and deacclimation as well as mid-winter hardiness determinations."
