Abstract/Contents:In the UK, pests such as Tipula spp., Agrostis spp. and slugs frequently cause marked reductions in the population of an established stand of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), and damage to newly sown swards, especially autumn reseeds, is widespread and severe. Field-plot tests were carried out in 1981-82 to evaluate the effect of some seed-bed treatments with phorate, terbufos, aldicarb, chlorpyrifos, chlorfenvinphos or cloethocarb on seedling stand and herbage yield. Soil cores taken prior to treatment showed that the main invertebrate pests were absent. It was concluded that the treatments had no phytotoxic or phytostimulatory effect on the germinaiton and establishment of the grass seedlings at the concentratons tested.
