Abstract/Contents:Discusses advancements in turfgrass breeding. States that "improvements in turfgrass maintenance have altered the way [golf] is played...[but] the most critical advancements affecting golf...have been in turfgrass breeding." Briefly profiles several turfgrass varieties, including Penn A and G series creeping bentgrasses and ultradwarf Bermudagrasses. Reports that "plant densities in [these] varieties are as high as 400 per square inch, while...varieties such as Penncrosss and the Tif series [have] approximately 75 to 100 shoots per square inch." Mentions high-shoot-density turf maintenance practices, stating that "some of the problems with high-shoot-density grasses are the way superintendents maintain them." Suggests that "high-shoot-density grasses that produce fast greens have forced architects to build larger putting surfaces to maintain adequate room for hole locations. In some cases, architects are designing flatter surfaces to address the faster greens but also compromise surface drainage." Concludes that "the [golf] industry has been provided with turf choices that [some] thought offered improved playability and adequate visual quality. But [superintendents] must alter [their] management of those varieties to get the most out of them, even if it means changing the way the game is played."
