| Abstract/Contents: | St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) is widely used for lawns in the southern coastal states of the USA, where it is attacked by various diseases and insect pests, the most important of these latter being Blissus insularis Barber, which can severely damage or kill entire lawns. Several Florida accessions of S. secundatum have shown resistance to B. insularis, the mechanism being antibiosis. Details are given of tests in which accessions with resistance to the bug were screened for resistance to the St. Augustinegrass decline strain of Panicum mosaic virus (PMV-SAD). Of the 17 accessions and 2 cultivars tested, 4 were symptomless carriers of PMV-SAD and 6 showed combined resistance to the bug and the virus; in 2 of the latter the level of combined resistance equalled to that of the cultivar Floratam, which was first released in 1973. |
