| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses athletic field performance related to impact absorption, traction, and enhancement of the game. States that "it is the turfgrass density of the field, or the individual number of plants per square unit of measure, that greatly enhances the impact absorption capabilities and reduces abrasiveness of the surface." Also discusses the role of soil type and soil moisture on the impact absorption of the field, stating that "the higher the moisture content and the lighter the soil texture, the 'softer' the field will play." Discusses potential cultural practices to enhance the game, including mowing, topdressing, fertilization, and irrigation. Describes infield management, stating that "a baseball infield must perform in a similar fashion as turfgrass" and highlights several factors to consider, including selection of material, conditioning products, and moisture management. Concludes that "in contrast to ornamental turf areas, water plays a very vital and functional role in providing safe, durable athletic fields that enhance the games of...intended users." |
