Abstract/Contents:Discusses the impact of depleting water supplies on golf courses across the United States, stating that "operators are under increasing public pressure to take steps to reduce usage, from stepped-up water recycling to high-tech irrigation." Suggests that "increasing competetion for existing water resources, tighter government restrictions and tougher environmental regulations are forcing course owners and superintendents to squeeze every drop possible from their irrigation systems." Discusses potential solutions, explaining that "influenced by factors ranging from global warming to increased water demands for population and housing growth, treated effluent is the way of the future for golf course irrigation." Suggests that for superintendents using effluent water "periodic soil-testing is necessary to ensure that the proper nutrient balances are maintained." States that for irrigation systems "automated sprinkler control systems, improved rotors and nozzles, soil moisture sensors, systems that measure moisture loss in turf and on-course weather stations all come into play...in the battle for more efficient watering programs."
