Abstract/Contents:Explains that the summer of 2005 brought a "record number of 90-plus-degree days and ample rainfall [that] turned [Kalamazoo, Michigan's] fairways into inviting hosts for brown patch, a disease rarely seen in western Michigan, and pythium, another fungus to which [is] rarely [given] a second thought." Describes how "as bad as [the summer of 2005] was for golf courses, others in the industry were less willing to attribute the hike in fungicide use solely to weather." States that "the jump in fungicide use could be a combination of weather and long-term changes in the market." Also states that "nearly $870 million was spent on fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and plant growth regulators in the turf and ornamental market in 2005." Includes various facts regarding the pesticide market, such as which companies are lead suppliers and which are new to the golf market. Concludes that "off-patent products are a major concern among manufacturers, who worry that such offerings could devalue the market and pose other lasting effects on the industry."
