Abstract/Contents:Discusses how the J.R. Simplot Coorporation has "agreed to pay a $7,280 fine stemming from a March 13, 2003 inspection of a St. Louis [Missouri] plant where fertilizer products were blended." States that a "Lange product was labeled to contain .86 percent of the active ingredient but was .01 percent short" according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Describes how "Simplot had petitioned the agency...to cut by one-half the amount of active ingredient in its Weed & Feed product [and] the EPA approved the change...however, the inspector in the St. Louis plant found that the product in question was stored and sold in bags with old labels that indicated it contained twice the amount of active ingredient than what was in the product." Concludes that "the EPA only has the ability to penalize for the samples in question or force a company to stop selling it...it cannot require the company to compensate its customers."
