Abstract/Contents:Discusses Dave Zahrte's, superintendent at Santa Ana Country Club in California, pursuit for "prefect [perfect] green firmness on a daily basis. It has resulted in what is believed to be the first comprehensive study of green firmness management conducted in the United States." States that "the research is being conducted at Santa Ana by the PACE Turfgrass Research Institute of San Diego, a private turf consulting firm that provides scientifically based solutions to its clients." Explains that "the condition of the greens...were perfect in the winter but too soft during summer." States that the study was conducted to "identify the cultural regimens superintendents need to exercise on a consistent basis to maintain year-round, uniform firmness of their greens." Suggests that "the trick for the superintendent during the summer is for the greens to be dry enough to be firm, yet hold enough moisture to maintain the health of the turf...it's very difficult to maintain such a delicate balance." Concludes that "once the study is completed, PACE officials believe the greens maintenance protocols that are identified will be applicable to all golf courses throughout the country."
