Title:Building a better bunker

Abstract/Contents:Describes potential methods of bunker construction, suggesting that "bunker problems are the result of poor or insufficient drainage and improper sand selection." Provides suggestions for drainage and sand stability, stating that "probably more important than anything else is that [one ensures their] bunkers have proper drainage. Without good drainage, [the] bunkers will likely become water hazards - and, worse, will need to be rebuilt." Suggests that "mounding and/or diversionary swales are easy ways to divert water away from bunkers." Mentions that "though sand preference is subjective, it's generally wise to choose a sand that is reasonably firm so that plugged lies are not a consistent problem." Explains that particle shape and the "range of particles contained within the sand" are "two factors that have a strong impact on the relative stability - or firmness - of the sand." Includes opinions from four superintendents, Chip Lafferty of Rye Golf Club, Blake Halderman of Brae Burn Country Club, Sean Cain of Sunningdale Country Club, and David Dudones of North Jersey Country Club, on golf course maintenance practices and member expectations.
