Abstract/Contents:Profiles the Blue Valley Grounds Department in Overland Park, Kansas, which "handles all the maintenance for 800 acres of district property. Besides the many different athletic fields, this includes hard and soft surfaced playgrounds, landscaping, almost 600 acres of ornamental turf, fencing, walkways and parking lots." Explains that the grounds department "has established four basic field maintenance programs based on soil profile, turf type and whether or not the field is irrigated...It breaks out like this: Native soil, cool-season, non-irrigated - 36.3 acres"; "native soil, cool-season, irrigated - 20.3 acres"; "native soil, warm-season, irrigated - 27.9 acres"; and "sand-based, warm-season, irrigated - 27.3 acres." Describes the operational structure of the department, stating that "the Blue Valley Grounds Department operates like a commercial lawn and landscape firm. All staff reports to a central building where assignments are made, materials and equipment are dispensed and loaded on trucks and trailers to travel to the job sites."
