Abstract/Contents:States that "for superintendents grappling with the increased cost of fuel to power their mower fleets, electric-drive systems would seem to be an obvious solution." Describes how "at the root of the challenge is the latent energy capacities of fossil fuels compared to batteries." Profiles mowers that are on the market and compares the advantages of each. Discusses a battery-powered mower, stating that "when the weather is cooler, [superintendents] need to have a second battery available for each machine, depending on the number of greens...in the summer, a single battery pack is enough." Also discusses engine speed in electric mowers, reporting that "the John Deere 2500-E 'hybrid' triplex greensmower is powered by the same 18 hp [horsepower] gas or diesel engine as its conventional 2500A counterpart, but the engine is run at a reduced 2,250 rpm [revolutions per minute] rather than the 3,000 rpm required to power a hydraulic system." Concludes by stating that "as battery technology improves...[the turf industry] will implement those improvements into [their] current and future electric products. Because of the relatively small size of the market, turf industry manufacturers must wait and follow the trails blazed by transportation and other industries with much larger economies of scale."
