Question:"Can you help promote a consensus view within our club regarding the banning of golf trolleys through wetter winter months? This topic causes much heated discussion annually and some guidance would be appreciated."
Answer/Response:"The additional wear associated with the use of trolleys is of greatest concern throughout the wetter winter months. We generally consider trolleys to be a menace in winter and the bulkier and heavier the trolley the greater the problem (comparing wide- wheel pull trolleys with battery-driven types). This is not bccause any one trolley does damage but due to the convergence of trolley users on more or less the same line around the course. Obviously the bulkier the trolley the fewer are the options for circumnavigating the 18 holes and the more wear and tear is concentrated. The greater this concentration of wear and tear the more obvious and disfiguring damage becomes and consequently, the more difficult. time-consuming and expensive it is to repair. At many clubs various options are employed to reduce this damage in wear-sensitive areas such as green approaches and around tees. Roping off danger areas or marking a white line well into the approach to take trolley traffic away from surrounds and directly to the next tee. together with encouraging trolley users to walk down the semi-rough may help. Having separate winter teeing grounds away from the summer ones can assist in diverting winter play from the main routes used through the rest of the year. However, helpful as these practices are, there will come a time when a trolley ban must be enforced, preferably before severe damage is noted. The alternative to using trolleys in winter is to carry a lightweight bag with fewer clubs. By doing this play will tend to speed up and wear will be spread far more evenly."
