Question:"Being a golf course on the east coast we suffer badly from the drying out effect of cold winds through the early spring. In addition, many of the greens have irregularly shaped lines of brown grass through June and July which look unsightly at a time when the appearance of our greens is important. What is causing this, and what can we do about it?"
Answer/Response:"The areas of brown grass are suffering from a condition termed 'dry patch' and in your sample superficial fairy ring activity was noted in the thatch and underlying soil. Despite recent wet summers, the incidence of 'dry patch' is becoming more common. Fungal activity can play an important part in making these areas difficult to wet up again through the summer months. These fungi thrive in thatchy conditions, so thatch reduction will help. Thatch is particularly prone to surface drying due to evaporation and moisture removal by spring winds. To promote a uniformally moist soil profile, wetting agents should be applied regularly through the spring and summer, perhaps even usefully through the winter, as a precautionary measure rather than as an attempt to cure the problem when areas of dead grass and snuff-dry soil become evident later in the year."
