Question:"Mid-way through the football season our soccer pitch starts to cut up badly, making for an uneven surface. Would regular rolling help smooth out the pitch?"
Answer/Response:"Repeated heavy rolling treatments should be avoided as these will smear the surface and cause considerable compaction in the soil profile. With time, excessive heavy rolling will impede drainage and lead to waterlogging, increasing the problem of the turf cutting up and match cancellations. In addition, the development of severe compaction at the surface will encourage the establishment and spread of shallow-rooted annual meadow-grass which is easily kicked out during play and does not provide a good stud hold. The disadvantages of rolling far outweigh the advantages, and levels can be restored satisfactorily after matches by using a light grassland chain harrow, tines uppermost."
