Question: | "We have an area of spare land near our clubhouse used as a car park extension. This is difficult to keep tidy due to the persistent growth of horsetail. Can you suggest effective control methods?" |
Answer/Response: | "As all experienced gardeners know, horsetail (Equisetum sp.) is one of the most difficult weeds to eliminate. The plant, which is a non-flowering relative of the ferns, has very deep rhizomes which are difficult to reach with herbicides and, even if top growth is killed, the plant tends to regenerate rapidly from sections of rhizome. A number of non-selective weedkillers can, however, be effective, particularly if repeated applications are given. These include products based on glyphosate, dichlorbenil, terbutryne or triclopyr - take care to follow the label instructions exactly when using these herbicides." |
