Question:"Arguments are raging between our greenkeeper and club members regarding rink changing. Players prefer two or three favourite rinks while the greenkeeper insists on moving strings frequently. Is he correct in advocating this?"
Answer/Response:"This is a very common bone of contention in flat-rink bowling clubs, and we would have no hesitation in supporting your greenkeeper's stand on this point. Heavy play on a few popular rinks gradually results in the green surface becoming trough-shaped, with the low point coinciding with the centre of a popular rink and the high spots with the strings. In time the bias of the bowls is counteracted as a result. When play is switched through 90° then players find themselves playing across corrugations in the surface which makes play in this alternative direction even more unpopular and the problem hence gets worse. One also finds that other variations in the playing surface develop. Popular rinks tend to become harder and more compact with thinner swards containing more annual meadow-grass as compared to the rest of the green. Surface uniformity, as well as levels, hence deteriorates. It is therefore essential to move strings daily, utilising several alternative rink positions. In addition, play should be turned through 90° each week. Spreading play as much as possible is a fundamental principle of good bowling green maintenance and is essential if a true surface is to be preserved in the long term."
