Question:"Once again we have had problems with the algal growth often called "Squidge" on one of our sloping fairways. The green slime is making surfaces dangerous for players and tractor drivers. Has any progress been made with control methods?"
Answer/Response:"The algae responsible for this condition have now been identified (see paper by N. Baldwin in this Journal). Recent tests have shown that control can be achieved using sulphate of iron (10 g per m2 bulked with sand). Iron is more effective if applied dry than in liquid form. Cresylic acid can also be used at 1.7 ml per 100 ml water per m2. Finally, dichlorophen mosskiller is also effective at 1.7 ml per 100 ml water per m2. Chemical control is short term - the alga tends to grow again in wet weather. Longer term control involves drying up the surface, for example by spiking, sanding, eliminating over-shading branches, etc. One of the useful features of short term chemical control is that it allows a tractor and spiker to be more safely taken over the area. In some cases the slime is present in such quantities that it can actually be brushed or shovelled of the affected area. This can also be useful, if practicable, as a preliminary to the repeated use of the chemicals mentioned above."
