Question: | "Our Green Committee feels that an old ditch on the lower part of the course adversely affects the 4th and 12th holes. The Chairman would like your views on the advisability of filling it in, bearing in mind that it does carry quite a lot of water in the winter." |
Answer/Response: | "I recall the ditch you mean, and even though it does run parallel to and crosses fairway areas in less than ideal places, I would think it would be most inadvisable to fill it in, even with stone. I think that such a move would bring on considerable wetness problems on these two holes, which collect water from a large acreage of surrounding higher land. At present this ditch acts as a very useful water-bearing channel, and also acts as an outlet for occasional mole drainage. So, the alternative to the ditch would be very expensive pipe drainage system. If the Club is really determined to eliminate the ditch, the best compromise may be to divert, provided that you can still maintain effectiveness and usefulness. To be able to comment further, I would need to see the results of a survey, which has involved taking spot levels over a wide area of this section of the course." |
