Question:"As you are aware, our greens contain a high proportion of annual meadow-grass and have been particularly poor during slow growing weather this autumn. Our greenkeeper suspects that some disease is also adding to our difficulties - can you confirm this from an examination of the enclosed turf sample."
Answer/Response:"Anthracnose disease, or basal root rot, caused by a fungus called Colletotrichum graminicola, is present. This is quite a common disease if climatic conditions are suitable for its development, as they have been this autumn, and it can be very damaging. Annual meadow-grass is most susceptible and the fungus causes it to turn yellow. The youngest leaf on each plant may take on a red coloration. On the shoot bases black fungal reproductive structures can usually be found. The disease occurs when growing conditions are poor particularly when soil compaction restricts air supply to the roots and where fertility is inadequate. Long term control can only be achieved by correcting the conditions which favour the disease. Reducing annual meadow-grass, which is in any event an undesirable species in a golf green, relieving compaction and giving adequate fertiliser dressings all contribute to the prevention of outbreaks. Fungicides are not often used but chlorothalonil products can be effective."
