Question:"We have trouble with wild geese on our race track. The birds fly in from an adjoining lake and graze the sward of the track. Since we normally cut at 100mm (4in) and the geese graze considerably lower than that, they are having quite a marked effect on the quality of the going on some sections of the track. Have you any useful suggestions?"
Answer/Response:"As far as this country is concerned we have heard of no really effective answer to this problem, apart from the usual agricultural bird-scaring devices which geese tend to get used to quite quickly. However, geese are a common problem in the United States also where they frequently cause trouble on the water hazards and surrounding swards of golf course. Over there, dealing mostly with Canada geese, it has been found that life-size plastic swans are extremely effective in discouraging geese. The swans, either singly or in family groups, are moored in the water and geese apparently will not land on stretches of water already occupied by swans. They tend therefore to fly off somewhere else, minimising damage to surrounding grassland. Swan models are available from a commercial firm in Connecticut but unfortunately we do not know of a similar product in this country. Perhaps with a little ingenuity it might be possible to produce suitable home-made models."
