Question:"Considerable dissatisfaction has been expressed amongst our members regarding the properties of our present bunker sand. Could you please advise us what class of sand is ideal for the purpose."
Answer/Response:"Care is required in the selection of sand for a bunker as it should not only provide acceptable playing conditions in the bunker itself, but should also do no harm to the actual green putting surface as sand is inevitably continuously splashed out of bunkers on to putting surfaces themselves. Bunker sands should therefore be free of large grit and gravel particles which would be a nuisance and damage mowers if they find their way on to greens themselves. Fine sands should also be avoided as they tend to pack and clog in the sand hazard, retaining water during wet weather. On the other hand, in dry or windy weather finder sands blow out of bunkers more easily. Bunker sands should therefore be in the medium-coarse range with the bulk of particles in the 0.25 to 1.0 mm size range. A small proportion of sand grains up to 2.0 mm may be tolerated. Sands should be lime-free to avoid the deleterious effect of limy sand when it is splashed on to putting surface swards."
