Question:"We have in the past used chlordane as a wormkiller but are rather worried about the high toxicity of this material. We understand that there are less dangerous chemicals which can be used for this purpose, some of which are selective in their action. Your views would be appreciated."
Answer/Response:"Chlordane remains the most effective material for wormkilling purposes, killing all earthworm species and having an effect which often lasts several years. As you say, it is a toxic material to humans, animals and all soil organisms, its poisonous nature being its main disadvantage. A less toxic alternative is carbaryl (sevin) which again kills all earthworm species but lasts only a maximum of 12 months. Selective wormkillers which kill only casting species or surface feeding species include chemicals based on thiophanate-ethyl or on carbendazim. These chemicals limit rather than completely eliminate earthworm activity and are likely to be rather short term in their action. Both also have useful fungicidal properties, controlling some turf diseases like Fusarium patch disease. In fact other turf fungicides such as Benomyl also have some effect in reducing earthworm populations."
