Question:"There are a number of prominent fairy rings on our outfield which one of our members has identified has being of the Grade 1 type caused by a fungus called Marasmius. The rings are unsightly and one of them occurs near the edge of the square itself and seems likely to encroach on to the wickets themselves in the near future. Is there any effective method of control, apart from the very laborious method of excavation and soil sterilisation?"
Answer/Response:"A reply to a similar enquiry reprinted in our last Journal confirmed that at that time there was no effective method of treating fairy rings apart from the time-consuming one of digging out the ring, sterilising with formaldehyde and then levelling with fresh soil and reseeding or returfing. Treatment by aeration and repeated doses of water and wetting agent had been tried but did not give reliable control of the most serious Grade 1 type of ring which produces bare ground as well as stimulated rings of growth. However, we are now pleased to report that a fungicide called oxycarboxin has become commercially available which is giving satisfactory results in the control of Grade 1 rings. A preparation is available which contains oxycarboxin combined with solvents and wetting agents and we would suggest this to be used. Unfortunately it is likely to prove prohibitively expensive to treat all the rings on your outfield, but at least the most prominent could be treated and, of course, the one threatening to encroach on the cricket table area."
