| Question: | "As you are aware, we are constructing a new green with a topsoil composed of a sand-soil-peat mix according to your specifications. We have sources of lignite available locally at an economical cost and were wondering if this could be used in the soil mix as a cheaper alternative to peat." |

| Answer/Response: | "Lignite is a hard gravel-like material halfway between peat and true coal and is unlikely to be an adequate substitute for peat in your bowling green topsoil mixture. The peat is included as a source of organic matter to hold nutrients and prevent excessively-rapid drying out of the soil layer. Lignite is likely to remain in the soil for a very long period of time and would not easily break down into a useful organic material. It would hence be much inferior to peat for the purposes mentioned above and we would, therefore, not recommend its use." |
